Doris Marie Watkins, 87, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2009 at her home.
She was born July 22, 1921 in Nortonville, KS, the daughter of Arthur Burgoyne and Helen Emma (Mitchell) Hiser. She was a 1942 graduate of Kansas State University receiving a degree in education. She was a retired USD 501 Math Teacher.
Mrs. Watkins was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Topeka Chapter of the DAR, Active Primetimers, and AAUW.
Doris married James Wesley Watkins in 1945. He preceded her in death on June 27, 1971. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Krueger in 1979 and a son, James Robert Watkins in 1988. Survivors include her son, Randall James Watkins, Milwaukee, WI; her daughters, Helen M. Davis of Topeka, and Lyn M. Alexander and her husband, Anthony of Topeka; her brother, Arthur B. Hiser of Texas; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 20, 2009 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1320 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Cremation will follow the services. Mrs. Watkins will lie in state after 3 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Private family inurnment will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, near Manhattan, KS.
