Doris L. Byrd

Doris L. Byrd, 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 21, 2009 in Sun City, AZ. She was born in Morgantown, WV on May 11, 1930. Doris attended Washburn University and retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield in 1989. Doris moved to Sun City, AZ in 1990 and was a frequent and active participant in Sun City recreational serving as a member of the Board of Directors for the Coordinator of Clubs for the Sun City Recreation Centers, President of the Lakeview and Fairway ceramic and porcelain clubs, and Questors. Doris devoted many volunteer hours to Sun City recreation activities. She was awarded many awards for her ceramic and porcelain works. Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sun City and a 25 year member of Topeka Chapter #462 OES. She particularly enjoyed Saturday mornings spending time with the "Cut Ups", doing paper tole decoupage artwork.

She is survived by daughters Pamela Dowler (Richard)of Arkansas City; Beth Lawson (Keith) of Topeka; Bonnie Lucas (Paul) of Louisburg; Barbara Goldsmith (Chris) of Cleveland, OH; two brothers, Frank Tennant of Mesa, AZ; Ralph Tennant of Waynesburg, PA; 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 10 nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Charles, a son William, a sister Elaine, a brother Robert, and granddaughter Erica.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
