Doris Marie Hunter, 88, passed away peacefully after a short illness on March 18, 2009 in Topeka.
She was born on November 17, 1920 in Atchison, Kansas to Canon Sholander and Florence Johnson; she was their forth child. After graduation from Topeka High School in 1937, she attended KU and studied accounting. She married John Hunter on May 17, 1941. He died in 1958.
After being widowed, Doris raised her three children alone and put all her children through college. She ran the first half-way house for the Menninger Clinic and was a residential and commercial real estate broker. Doris opened her first antique shop in Park Rapids, MN. She continued running Log Cabin Antiques and working as a cashier for Prudential First Auctions until her death.
In all, she was the much-loved matriarch of her family for over fifty years; she will be greatly missed.
Doris is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Keith Sayler, of Topeka; her three children and their spouses, Karen and John Reddy, Kay and Bob Adamson, and Wayne and Janet Hunter, all of Topeka; two nieces and two nephews; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Emery Sholander; husband, John Hunter; grandson, Robbie Adamson; and brother, Marlow Sholander.
