Doris Horton

June 17, 1922 — November 7, 2013

Doris Horton, 91, passed away in Topeka at Stormont Vail Hospital after a brief illness November 7, 2013.

Doris was born in Wayside, KS, June 17, 1922, to Bert and Lillian Horton. She attended elementary school in Wayside and graduated from Independence High School. Doris graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BA and MA in Business Education. She also received an Education Specialist Degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She taught for many years at Broward Community College as a business teacher in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

She moved back to Kansas and lived for a short time in Independence before retiring to Topeka. She traveled frequently and also loved birding. Doris was a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale.

Her parents, Lillian and Bert Horton, and her siblings, Lucine Sheedy, Wilma Kurtis, Ruth Diver, Hubert Horton, and a nephew, Scott Kurtis preceded her in death.

Surviving relatives include: sister, Bernice Hecht, and nieces and nephews, Bill Kurtis, Jean Schodorf, Jack Horton, Susan Veith, Kathy Schiefelbein, Ruth McKee, Doris Slane, Greg Hecht, Cynthia Hecht Lubeski, Marcia Lowry, and twenty-nine great nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at Wayside Christian Church in Wayside, KS at 1:00p.m. Memorials are suggested to Wayside Christian Church.
