Early the morning of June 22nd, 2018, Doris J. Edwards passed away after battling cancer for several months and one of the world's brightest lights went dark.
Doris J. Pool was born July 6, 1924 in Horton Kansas, the first of four children born to John William Pool and Ethie Myrle Hill Pool. During the height of the Great Depression, her family relocated to a family farm on the edge of Circleville Kansas where she was raised and attended school through the 12th grade. After graduation, Doris moved to Topeka where she attended Washburn University and worked at Western Union in the telegraph department. Later Doris also worked as the manager of Aldens Catalog Store. Her crowning career achievement was owning and operating Edwards Liquor Store in Topeka until she retired in 2000.
Doris met William (Bill) Herbert Heleker in 1942 and the two were married February 19th of 1944. The two later divorced, but not before they had two beautiful daughters – Mary Anne and Sue Ellen.
Doris married Larry E. Edwards on January 15, 1976. Together they traveled the world near and far until his death in 1993, making dear friends along the way.
Doris was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband Larry E. Edwards, her daughter Sue Ellen (Greg) Egner of Sanger TX, and her brother Howard M. (Gloria) Pool of Phoenix AZ.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Anne (Jim) Hayes of Topeka, two sisters: June Ann Moore (Tom) of Topeka and Rhoda Jane Ward of Topeka, two grandchildren: Bob Hayes (Julie) of Bozeman MT and Sara Egner of Austin TX as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step daughter Cynthia L Fricke (Jim) of Overland Park KS, step son Randall R. (Amy) Edwards, step grandchildren Aaron Edwards of Topeka, Kyle E. Fricke (Katy) of Olathe KS, Amanda Fricke of Overland Park KS, Madelyn Mae Fricke of Olathe KS and Aiden Fricke of Olathe KS.
A celebration of Doris Jeanne Pool Heleker Edwards' life will be held at 10:30 on Saturday, June 30th at Mount Hope Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, Doris has requested that memorials be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission – 600 N. Kansas Avenue, the Helping Hands Humane Shelter of Topeka - 5720 SW 21st Street, Midland Care Hospice – 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS, or the charity of your choosing.
