Doris Faye Bomar Dodd, 87, of Topeka, KS, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 23, 2021 at home, attended by her two daughters. She had been weakened by a stroke in early December.
Doris was born December 29, 1933 in Bovina, TX, and grew up along with 13 brothers and sisters in the farming-and-ranching community of House, NM. A homemaker, Doris was best known as a compassionate, knowledgeable Bible teacher of children and adult women at congregations of the Church of Christ where she worshipped throughout her lifetime. She was long active as a Study Helper in the World Bible School program and taught English as a second language at the local library. After a 1991 missionary trip to Nigeria, she became a strong supporter of the African Christian Schools Foundation; the Church of Christ, Obudu, Cross River State, Nigeria; the Dodd-Gann Academy in Obudu for at-risk orphaned and single-parent children; and the Christian Relief Fund based in Amarillo, TX.
Doris married her childhood sweetheart, Howard Dean Dodd October 15, 1951 in Clovis, NM, where they lived before moving throughout the Southwest for Howard's work for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. They settled in Topeka in 1976. Howard preceded her in death on December 2, 2008. Her granddaughter Jennifer Dultmeier and her grandson Nathan Dodd also preceded her in death.
While an avid and accomplished cook, gardener, seamstress, and quilter, Doris could often be found with binoculars, watching native birds feeding and nesting in her wildflower-filled backyard. She loved exploring nature at home and in her travels--from Prince Edward Island and the Gulf Coast to the Peruvian Andes and Amazonian rainforest. Other favorite activities included cooking up enchiladas and sopapillas for guests, crocheting delicate blankets to welcome new babies, and canning garden vegetables and blackberry jelly. Raised during the Depression and ever frugal, the adage "reduce, reuse, recycle" was second nature to her, adding impetus to her sewing and vegetable gardening projects as well as her contributions to the World Wildlife Fund and the Nature Conservancy.
Beloved friends of Doris have described her as "one-of-a-kind" and commented "to know her is to love her." High praise for a woman who acted as a loving, leveling force in all her relationships. She overlooked age, degree, title, and salary making each person with whom she related feel special and important by simply being in her company.
Doris is survived by her brother, Ted Bomar of Edgewood, TX; two sons, Wesley Dodd (Teresa) of Monument, CO and Bradley Dodd (Sandra) of Lubbock, TX; two daughters, Melissa Dodd Eskilson (Kurt) of Topeka and Lori Dultmeier (Jim) of Topeka; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren: Alicia Thompson, daughter Tessa and son Thane; Jeremy Dodd (Brenda), daughter Brittany and son Justin; Shannon Hoops (Mike) and daughters Saydee, Talia, and Sybil; Eric Dodd (Kylie) and sons, Nathan, Tate, and Jace; Amy Dodd Peterson (Eric), daughter Mackenzie and son Ian; Kevin Dodd (Tonya) and daughters Avery, Claire, and Emma; Brooke Eskilson Patterson (Wade) and daughters Raina and Freya; Blake Eskilson; Alek Eskilson; Justin Dultmeier (Emily), son Tyson and daughters Alexis, Bailey, Kennedy, and Charlotte; and David Dultmeier (Becky) and daughters Ryleigh and Reagan and son Emmitt.
