Doris Adele Myers Cowie, 93, formerly of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Cliff View Assisted Living Community, St. George, Utah.
Doris was born November 17, 1916 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of George and Florence Myers and was raised and lived most of her 93 years in Topeka. She moved to Mesquite, Nevada in June, 2007 where she lived for a year before moving to St. George.
Doris was an avid tennis player from the age of 7 and continued playing tennis until she was 79 years old. She was an organizer and first secretary of the first tennis club in Topeka in the mid-1930's. She was active in church, enjoyed golf and bridge. Doris was a charter member and helped organize the GK Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood of Topeka in 1956 and was a 60 year PEO member.
Doris married James Cowie on June 14, 1962 in Topeka. He preceded her in death on February 12, 1992.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Lorraine Lyle and her brother, William Myers.
She is survived by her son Stan Laidlaw, daughter-in-law Sarah, and grand dog Hoss of Mesquite, Nevada. She is also survived by two nephews from Kansas and Missouri and four nieces living in Colorado.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Doris will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 2-3:30 pm Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
