Donald Driver, 89, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2016, after a long courageous battle with lung cancer.
Don was born December 30, 1926, in Quenemo, KS, to Roy and Hannah (Windett) Driver. He graduated from Quenemo High School in 1944. After graduation he joined the US Army at the end of WWII. He was stationed in North Carolina and came back on leave to marry the love of his life Dorothy Louise Evinger. After a short time in North Carolina they returned to Quenemo, KS and opened a restaurant, Don and Dorothy's Café. During that time Don got a job at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Topeka, Ks. Don decided to stay at Goodyear so they moved to Topeka where they lived until his death raising their family. He was an active member of the Rubber Workers Local Union 302 traveling to DC advocating for worker's rights. Family vacations were spent taking their two children all over the country to visit family. They manage to visit every state except Alaska. After 42 years of service at Goodyear he retired and took up golf, never looking back. His love for high school basketball which he played extended in to a KU basketball fan watching every game he could. Don was also a long-time member of Crestview United Methodist Church for over 50 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Dorothy Louise (Evinger) Driver; two children, Dee (Tad) Pritchett and Dresden (Elizabeth) Driver; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Jim Driver, Joe Driver, Peggy Friesen, Veda Rogers, and Howard Driver.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Bill Driver, John Driver, and Dick Driver.
A funeral ceremony will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Private family burial will follow the service at Oak Hill Cemetery, Quenemo, KS.
