Donald P. Smith

Donald P. Smith, 85, of Topeka, died on Friday, October 24, 2014 at his residence.

Don was born on January 30, 1929 in Clyde, KS the son of Leonard and Elizabeth Smith. He moved with his family to Oketo, KS and graduated from Oketo High School in 1947 and from Kaw Area Vo-Tech School.

Don worked for Menninger's for many years and retired in 1993.

He was a volunteer at Stormont-Vail hospital and Let's Help and was a member of Masonic Lodge #91 of Marysville, KS. Don was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Donald enjoyed his hobby of oil painting immensely and loved to show his work at several local art shows.

Donald was married to Katherine Honstead on June 2, 1957 at First Lutheran Church in Topeka.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine N. Smith of Topeka; son, Craig Smith of Prairie Village, KS; brother-in-law, Walter Schwarz of Marysville; sister-in-law, Gloria Smith of Des Moines, IA as well as numerous nieces, nephews and neighbors that were greatly loved and cherished.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, by sister, Harriet Smith Schwarz, and by two brothers, Leonard M. Smith and Eldridge F. Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 4746 SW 21st St., Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Donald will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka after 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Trinity Presbyterian Church.
