Donald Lee Nelson, 85, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2015.
He was born on August 25th, 1929 in Topeka, KS to Sylva Bohnenblust. He spent much of his childhood on his grandmother's farm (Maggie Siverling), outside Randolph, KS. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1947. He served in the US Navy from 1948-1953 during the Korean War on the U.S.S. Rowan as a radio operator.
He married Betty Chelstrom on August 20, 1952 in Randolph, KS.
After the Navy, he attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor's degree in Business and Accounting. He began his career in accounting with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company in Kansas City, MO and later moved to Topeka in 1962. In Topeka, he worked for over 32 years for the accounting firm that is now known as Wendling, Noe, Nelson, and Johnson. He and wife Betty are long term active members of Lowman United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Downtown Topeka Kiwanis Club for many years.
Donald was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his KU Jayhawks, attending basketball and football games for over 50 years and even in later years enjoyed discussing KU sports with anyone.
Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Nelson of Topeka; his two daughters, Amy (Dan) Nackley of Basehor and Susan Nelson of Leavenworth; his son, Jim (Gwyn) Nelson of Topeka. He has five grandchildren and three great-grandsons, whom he loved dearly: April Nelson, Emily (Gabriel) Fossoh, Sarah (Steve) Ramos, Aaron Perkins, Corey Perkins, Matthew Nelson, Micah and Noah Ramos.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Lowman United Methodist Church, 4000 Drury Lane in Topeka; the family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Private burial of his cremated remains will be at Fancy Creek Cemetery in Randolph, KS.
