Donald M. Lanning M.D., 92, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2022.
He was born November 17, 1929, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of James Dunn Lanning and Myrtle Francis (McQuilliam) Lanning. He graduated from Hutchinson High School and went on to attend Hutchinson Community College where he obtained his Associate's Degree. He graduated from the University of Kansas with his M.D.
He served in the United States Navy as a flight surgeon for five years.
Don was a friend to all. He attended Church of the Brethren and later became a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.
He was consummate professional in his medical practice. He was involved in numerous professional organizations and served in key board positions. He started his Family Practice in 1960 in Fallbrook, California, retiring in 1999. Don was also a lifelong member of the Lion's Club; serving in numerous roles and the American Medical Association and the California Medical Association. He was also a certified Flight Surgeon and Aviation Medical Examiner; and private pilot.
Don and his wife Wilma were proud travelers to all 50 states and did extensive genealogy research. Together they traveled with their kids on family vacations; they traveled to Kansas every other summer.
Donald married Wilma Fern Lanning on June 1, 1951 in Hutchinson. She preceded him in death on September 19, 2019. Survivors include his children, Sabrina (Rick) Finn, Scott (Theresa) Lanning, Brad Lanning, Heather (Ed) Lanning-Eller; grandchildren, Brian (Sarah) Lanning, Aaron (Betty) Lanning, Randy (Katie) Lanning, Jonathan Lanning, Richard Finn, Katrina (Christian) Johnston, Nathaniel Eller, and Katherine Eller and his brother, Paul Lanning.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma Fern Lanning; son, Greg Lanning; Fordina (Clinton) Weber, Darlene (Jenis) Olson, Francis Lanning.
A Celebration of his Life will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at the Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 SW Burlingame Rd., Topeka. Private interment will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Countryside United Methodist Church 3221 SW Burlingame Rd., Topeka, KS 66611.
