Donald L. Brunnert, son of Charles H. and T. Eunice Brunnert passed away on August 15, 2011 at the age of 81. Don graduated from Topeka High, class of '49. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and graduated from Washburn in 1957 with a BA in History. He joined his father working in the Santa Fe Railroad accounting department. He accepted positions in the Santa Fe Chicago and San Francisco offices, finally returning to Topeka after the death of his father. Don retired from the Santa Fe Railroad in November 1986. Don's interests included shortwave radios, baseball, and Chiefs football. Don loved his family and the family pets. He especially enjoyed joining his fellow Santa Fe retirees in their Tuesday morning breakfast at Perkins.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Charles Gene; his sister-in-law Imogene Schlichter; and niece Vicki Brunnert.
He is survived by his nephew Charles W. Brunnert (wife Patricia), and their children from Fort Worth, TX; his niece Toni Behling (husband Scott), and their children from Utah; his cousins David Swindell; Ken Swindell (wife Mary), and their children; Alan Webb; and Mike Webb (wife Kathleen), and their children.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66606. Mr. Brunnert will lie in state from 4:00-8:00 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.
