Donald H. "Don" Gettman

Donald Herman Gettman, 90, Topeka, passed away Monday, September 17, 2018.
Don was born on July 20, 1928 in Pierce, NE, the son of Henry John Gettman and Katheryn Stroh. He was the youngest of ten children. He entered the first grade at age 4 and graduated from Pierce High School in 1944. Growing up, he worked hard on his parent's farm.
Don served in the active U.S. Air Force from November 1951 to November 1955, during the Korean Conflict. He served in the Strategic Air Command and received an honorable discharge. He served four additional years in the Air Force Reserve.
After his discharge, Don was employed as a professional photolithographer, until he retired at age 62.
Don had a life-long love for automobile restoration. He completely rebuilt his first car at age 16, under direction of the local garage owner. He especially enjoyed restoring Corvairs and Mustangs.
He was also creative. After age 62, Don completed six semesters of Fine Art at Eastfield Community College in Mesquite, Texas. He became an avid artist. He was highly skilled in sculpture, casting in bronze and plaster. He also enjoyed lapidary, jewelry making and woodworking.
Don married Marianne Kroupa in 1948. They were married 30 years until their divorce in 1978. Don married Barbara Fecko in 1981. They were married 37 years until Barbara passed away in January 2018.
During his final six months of life, Don resided with his daughter in Topeka.
Survivors include Michael Gettman and his wife Susan, Austin, TX, Dawn Gettman, Topeka, KS and his grand-dog, Cody.
A memorial/visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018 at chapel located in the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center, 2220 SW Gage, Topeka, KS.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Wyuka Cemetery, 3600 "O" Street, Lincoln, NE.
