Donald C. Monroe

Donald C. Monroe, 86, of Meriden, formerly of Topeka, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2011.

He was born October 9, 1924 in Jamestown, NY the son of Harley W. and Daisy (Cullen) Monroe.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII and Korean War.

He was employed by Kansas Power and Light as well as working for 32 years at The United States Postal Service, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of First Free Methodist Church.

Donald married Virginia Jo Wymer on September 2, 1950. She preceded him in death on September 24, 1977. He married Evelyn Mae Robinson on May 17, 1982 in Oklahoma, she survives. Other survivors include children Judy (Ken) Grose, of Berryton; Laurie (Tim) Woolbright of Meriden; Bill (Matie) Grubham of Lecompton; Joe Grubham of Topeka; Five grandchildren, Alben ( Sara) Stilley of Lawrence; Tanya (Jim) Leuty of Meriden; Dusty Grubham of Lecompton; Matie A. Grubham of Topeka; Matthew (Holly) Busey of Topeka; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 Great- great grandson; Three siblings, Charles Monroe of Savannah, GA; John Paul Monroe of Jamestown, NY; Lowell Monroe of Jamestown, NY.

He was preceded in death by his parents also by a step-daughter, Holly Stack; Grandchildren, Amber Grubham, Ryan Stack, and Sara Stack; Two brothers, James Monroe and Richard Monroe.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2011 at the First Free Methodist Church, 3450 SE Indiana St., Topeka, KS 66605. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. Monroe will lie in state after 3 p.m., on Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made Midland Care Hospice House of Kansas, 200 SW Frazier Cr., Topeka, KS 66606.
