Donald E. Bergeson

May 29, 1934 — October 31, 2023

Don E. Bergeson, 89, of Topeka, passed away on October 31, 2023, at home with his family by his side.

He was born on May 29, 1934, to Herbert and Margaret Bergeson in Estherville, Iowa.

Don began his adult life with the want to serve his country. He enlisted in the US Marines right out of high school. Concluding his time in the marines, he continued his law enforcement career with the Iowa Highway Patrol, and being the driver for Governor Loveless of Iowa, before moving to Kansas with his wife and daughter to become a Deputy US Marshall. Don retired from the US Marshall Service in 1991. Through all his 89 years, he devoted every possible moment to his country, and the freedom the US represents.

On September 23, 1961, he married Karen (Kennedy) Bergeson. Don and Karen lived in Topeka, Kansas, but initially began their love story in Des Moines, IA. Their story started by Karen running into the back of Don's patrol car. She called him some choice words, but she finally caved and accepted his date request.

Don was a die-hard outdoorsman. Anytime he could, he wanted to spend his weekends camping, fishing, woodworking and simply just driving.

Don is survived by his daughter, Tammy Walter, son-in-law Forrest Walter, granddaughter, Taryn (Levi) Watts, and grandson Zachary Walter, and four of his siblings

He was preceded in death by his wife; Karen Bergeson, parents; Margaret & Herbert Bergeson, and two of his siblings.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023, 10:00 am at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
