Donald Eugene Baker, 91, of Overland Park, KS passed away Sept. 8, 2017. Don was the youngest of nine children of James and Mary (Braun) Baker. Don married Doris Leona (Frazier) Baker on Oct. 31, 1948 and was married for 34 years until Doris passed away in 1982. During this time Don and Doris lived in Tecumseh, Kansas where they enjoyed outdoor activities including camping, fishing, square dancing, and gardening. Don was also an accomplished woodworker with many fine items that will remind us of Don.
After Don graduated from Highland Park High School in 1943, he completed the journeyman machinist program at the Topeka Santa Fe shops and went on to work in the Topeka Goodyear engineering support shop for more than 30 years. During his time working for Goodyear he received the Paul Litchfield award for outstanding employee contribution and also contributed to multiple patents granted to Goodyear on tire building equipment.
In 1984, Don retired and relocated to Mesa, AZ. and Lake of the Ozarks, MO. to enjoy his retirement years. In 2002, Don married Mary Catherine Hilbert who preceded him in death in 2009. Don had many good times with the Hilbert family.
Don's surviving family members include his 2 sons, Alan Baker and wife Melody, Marc Baker and wife Marjorie; stepson, Michael D. Hilbert and wife Carolyn; and stepdaughter, Becky Burghart and husband Mark. Don is also survived by his 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; and 4 step great grandchildren.
Family will greet friends from 10:00-11:00 on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Penwell Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Avenue.
