DeLoris "Dee" Howard, 77, Topeka, lost her long battle with leukemia and went to be with her Lord on Sunday, October 12, 2014. Dee was born September 23, 1937 to Edwin and Leota (Wilkins) Thornton. Dee graduated from Seaman High School in 1955.
She married John J. Howard on July 20, 1956. John and Dee were blessed with four daughters, Debbie (Larry) Dew, Sheryl (Greg) Berroth, Denise Howard (Mark Kistler), Sandra (Clark) Brady; one son, John E. (Shirley) Howard; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one sister, Norma Thompson.
Dee was a stay at home mom until her children were out of school, then she worked temp office jobs.
Dee was a member of First Southern Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading and studying her Bible and attended the BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) meetings that were held at First Southern.
Dee was an avid bowler. She bowled in the city and state tournaments every year and also bowled in thirty one WIBC National Championship tournaments. Dee was on the Board of Directors of the Topeka Women's Bowling Association for a number of years and is a member of the TWBA Hall of Fame. She loved to travel and, mostly because of her bowling trips, she had the semi-rare accomplishment of having visited all fifty states.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Rochester Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
