Delmer A. "Del" Anderson, of Topeka, Kansas, slipped away November 23, 2010, at Stormont-Vail Medical Center, at the age of 80.
Mr. Anderson was born in McCook, Nebraska, May 30, 1930, the first of two sons of Edward and Goldie Anderson. He spent his childhood on a farm southwest of Oberlin, Kansas, and graduated from Decatur County Community High School in 1948. He attended Bethel College in Newton, Kansas, where he was employed as a department manager for J.C. Penney Department Store in Newton, and later as a buyer for Newman's Department Store in Emporia.
He entered the Insurance business in 1965, earning the designation of Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) in 1970. He was relocated to Topeka as Agency Manager of Union Central Life Insurance Company. In 1976, he joined the Brier-Payne Meade Insurance Agency as a Life, Health, Pension, and Retirement Specialist, to which he devoted the balance of his professional life.
An avid private aviator, Mr. Anderson was active for more than 30 years as an adviser to Air Explorer Post 8 of Topeka. His passion was not only in teaching teenagers to fly, but to use the training process as a vehicle in character-building, leadership training, and citizenship. He was instrumental in the development of the Post's concession operation for the annual Combat Air Museum Airshow, which funded a significant portion of the Post' expenses.
Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Joan (Pat), children Brent Anderson of Glendora, CA; daughters Jill Thomas, Joan Anderson of Topeka, and Gregg Anderson of Naples, FL.
Surviving grandchildren are Dana Roberts Bayless, of Sacramento, CA, James Anderson of Longview, TX, Derek Roberts of Topeka, Pfc. Aaron Anderson, U.S. Army, Alan and Logan Saylor, of Topeka, and QiQi Marie Anderson of Naples, FL. He is also survived by his mother, Goldie Anderson, age 100, of Caldwell, ID, his brother, Dole B. Anderson, of Perry, UT.
Memorial Celebration will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Topeka Saturday, November 27, 2010, at 10:00 AM. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
