Dell William "Smitty" Schmidt, Sr., 67, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at his home.
Smitty was born February 12, 1939 in Alma, WI, son of Waldemar and Arvilla Schmidt. He grew up and graduated in La Crosse, WI. Following graduation, he joined the U. S. Air Force and served his country for 9 years as a Parachute Rigger. He later enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and served for several years.
Smitty married Carolyn Burnett on October 15, 1960 in Beaumont, TX. They later moved to Topeka in 1963 where he retired and focused on his love of cars. Smitty had a great influence on the racing community in Topeka and surrounding states.
Survivors include, his wife, daughter, Debra L. Aragon, Tulsa, OK, three sons, Dell W. Schmidt, Jr., Randy L. Schmidt, and Brent A. Schmidt, all of Topeka, seven grandchildren, and sister, Betty Olson, Prescott, WI.
Services for Smitty will be 1 p.m., Monday, April 10 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. He will lie in state at 12 noon, Sunday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. that evening.
