Dean Smith

January 29, 1956 — February 20, 2016

Dean Smith, 60, Topeka, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016.

He was born January 29, 1956, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Robert and Mary (Steves) Smith.

Dean graduated from Topeka High in 1974. He was a Master Plumber with a master mechanical license working at E.M. Smith Plumbing and McElroy's. He later went to work at Stormont-Vail Hospital, where he was currently the Director of Design and Construction.

Dean married Cindy Spatz in 1977. They had 3 children. Dean later married Nancy E. Smith on January 30, 1999 in Topeka at Lowman United Methodist Church. She survives. Other survivors include his children: Nicholas D. Smith (Catherine), Lexington, MO; Emily J. Dieker (Tyler), Lawrence, KS and Kyle R. Smith, Topeka; four siblings: Jackie Howard, Topeka; Gregg A. Smith (Wendy), Topeka; Linda S. Larson (Brian), El Dorado, KS and Nancy J. Garner (Kevin), Topeka and two granddaughters, Victoria Smith & Tessa Dieker.

Dean was an avid sports fan but the sports he loved the most were those of his three children. Whether coaching or cheering them on, he never missed a game and was incredibly proud of each of them. Dean and Nancy spent every weekend at the lake boating and camping with friends and family. He and Nancy especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren at the lake. He enjoyed his annual hunting and golf trips, vacations to Mexico and family vacations to Table Rock Lake. He knew how to enjoy life; he loved his family and considered his many, many friends part of that family.
