David R. Ewing, 85, died Sept 1 at a local hospital.
Mr Ewing was member of the First Presbyterian Church. He had previously served as an elder and deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of St Louis.
Mr Ewing retired Nov 5, 1976 from the National Archives and Records Service with the Federal Government. He was first employed in the War Department in Washington,
D.C. in 1940. Mr Ewing was employed by the Great Bend Tribune prior to his government service.
He served in the Army from Jan 11, 1941 to Dec 22, 1945. He served in Europe and the Philippines. Among his awards were the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.
Mr Ewing was born Nov 5, 1918 in Nickerson, the son of Lloyd A. and Grace G. Long Ewing. He graduated from Great Bend High School. He attended Chillicothe Business College, Syracuse University and Kansas State University. Mr Ewing was a long time scout, receiving an Eagle Scout Badge with three palms, Able Sea Scout, and assistant scoutmaster. He attended the first National Jamboree in Washington, D.C. in 1937. He was also a member of the Thomas Jefferson Chapter Sons of the American Revolution and the KSU President's Club.
He is survived by a brother, Albert R. Ewing of San Diego, a sister Marceline R. Ruediger, Topeka and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother John C. Ewing, and two sisters; Margery Ewing and Joan Reed.
Graveside services and burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, Tues, Sept 7 at 11:00. Mr Ewing will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Sunday, where the family will receive friends from 4:00-5:00 PM at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel.
