Dr. David Merle Bryan, 83, of Topeka died on Monday January 3, 2005 after an extended illness.
He was born on June 9, 1921 in Peoria, Illinois, the oldest of 9 children of Sibyl and Clifford Bryan. When he was 8 years old, his family returned to their ancestral home in Howell County in south-central Missouri where he grew up on a small farm. In 1939, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and a year later, began his higher education He worked his way through University of Missouri and graduated 3`s in his class and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa honorary fraternity. He received his graduate degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School and began his first pastorate in Chicago at the Jackson Blvd Christian Church.. During subsequent years, he served Christian Churches in Sedalia, Missouri and Chicago and moved to Topeka in 1960 to begin a 18 year pastorate at First Christian Church. He retired in 1978 to establish Bryan World Tours and Bryan Career College.
He met his wife, Margie Casteel, when he enrolled in a class she taught at the university and after a short courtship, they were married on December 23, 1943 in her parent's home in Columbia, Missouri. She preceded him in death.
He had an intense thirst for knowledge that lasted his entire life. Throughout the years, he traveled the globe extensively, visiting and studying most of the countries of this world. He became an accomplished photographer, writer, SCUBA diver, pilot and amateur radio operator. He was interested in philosophy, gardening, history, genealogy and was a collector of antique radios.
His four children are Margie Ann Rogers, Edwyn Russell Bryan, David Merle Bryan, Jr., and Daniel William Bryan.
Margie Ann and her husband, Steven, of Topeka have 3 children: Elizabeth Reimer, Bryan Rogers and Susan Jasso.
Edwyn and his wife, Elaine, of Topeka have three children: Aimee Oesterreich, Kelley Bryan, and Casey Bryan.
David, Jr. and his wife Marty live in Derby, KS. He has three daughters: Andrea Bryan, Alaynna Bryan and AnnElise Trick. A son, David Russell Bryan, preceded his grandfather in death.
Daniel and his wife, Kim, of Tulsa, Oklahoma have two children: Katelyn Bryan and Barrett Bryan.
There are eight great-grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at First Christian Church on Thursday, January 6 at 2:00 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church at 1880 Gage, Topeka, KS 66604.
