Darl Eugene Everett, Sr was born November 25, 1938 to John Everett Sr and Marian Everett in Topeka, Kansas. Darl was the fourth child of seven siblings; he would soon be lovingly referred to as, "Darl Eugene" by family and close friends.
Darl Eugene Everett Sr began his formal education in Topeka 501 Public Schools. He completed kindergarten through sixth grade at Buchanan Elementary School, 7th-9th grade at Crane Junior High, and 10th-12th at Topeka High School…Hoy, Hoy Mighty Troy!
Shortly after high school Darl Eugene Everett Sr enlisted in the United States Army for 24 months. Those 24-months motivated Darl to enroll in college at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas graduating with a B.S. in Psychology. He went on to complete his Master's Degree in Psychology at Kansas University. Several of his nieces, great nieces and his son followed in his footsteps…… Rock Chalk Jayhawks!
Darl Eugene Everett Sr began his career at the Topeka Police Department in 1962 as a patrolman. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 1st, 1971 and later promoted to Lieutenant on September 26th, 1981. He retired from the police department on November 22nd, 1988 after serving 26 years protecting and serving the Topeka community. Nowhere near tired, he served as a guardian and teacher; working with young men at Shawnee County Juvenile Correctional Complex; formerly known as Y-CAT.
It would seem, Darl Eugene Everett Sr was not yet ready to be retired from public service. Determined to continue to serve the community, Darl went on to continue working as a security guard, with the responsibility of patrolling and monitor buildings, answer alarms and ensuring employees were safe at Blue Cross Blue Shield from June 2003 to June 2014. Lastly, he served as a security guard at the Civil-Military Public Topeka Regional Airport for several years. Like many people, Darl Eugene Everett Sr. continued to work because he truly loved his chosen profession. Hence, he never worked a day in his life.
Darl Eugene Everett Sr fully understood that we do not live by bread alone. Marrying his high school sweetheart; Ruth "Tootie" Scales was one of the most memorable days of his life. From this union, Darl Eugene Everett Jr (Butch) and Terilyn Lynette Lockhart Everett (passed) were born. Darl Eugene Everett Sr. was proud of his professional achievements, however, everything else paled in comparison to his role as husband, father, leader and provider for his family. Much of Darl Eugene Everett Sr's military and law enforcement training pored over into how he lived… on the front-line of the battlefield of life…
Without question, Darl Eugene Everett Sr's wife and children understood and knew he was prepared to go to battle for them regardless of the cost. This same way of thinking, feeling, and posture has been transferred to his son; Darl Eugene Everett, Jr., who has attained the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army, and undoubtly will be passed on to his grandchildren.
Darl Eugene Everett Sr had a sense of quiet confidence about him. He was a combination of passive reflection and thoughtfulness of others; much like a quiet storm. He loved to bowl, BBQ, have family gatherings, play cards, and racquet ball. You could find him at the YMCA on any given morning on the racquet ball courts, "schooling them"! He played racquet ball religiously, for hours, with consistent and conscientious regularity; aka; All-The-Time! He continued to play racquet ball in his later years until he received his call home from the Lord. He would often stop by his mother's house on Sunday's to see what she had cooked for dessert; he loved his mama's cooking!
Darl Eugene Everett Sr's family will continue to flourish in his absence, a gift he imparted to them. He is survived by his son, Darl Everett, Jr. (LuSundra), his grandson Darl Eugene Everett III, his granddaughters; Donavyn, Ashley, and Candace, and great grandson; Terrion, along with his two youngest sisters; Delilah Lynn, and Mary Frances, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will think of him often and miss him dearly.
Darl Eugene Everett Sr. recognized, embraced, and lived out his Godly gift of being a "protector". He walked in his gift daily with his family, friends, and throughout his career. He was known to quietly and unassumingly show up where his loved ones traveled, ensuring their safety and the safety of others was indeed his life's work.
"Don't waste your time in anger, regrets, worries, and grudges. Life is too short to be unhappy."
Roy T. Bennett
