Danny Wayne Bowman, 68, gained his wings on April 19th, 2022, in his current hometown of Topeka, KS after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.
Danny was born on July 18th, 1953, in Gary, IN to Alfred Sr. and Annie Bowman. He spent his young life in the Tarrytown area of Gary, Indiana where he attended Horace Mann High School and was a standout basketball player before graduating in 1972. Danny went on to attend Kentucky State University to play basketball the following year. After college, Danny began working for Standard Oil Company and became a chief operator. He was a part of management with Sears for many years and his work career also included security for many years in Chicago where he worked in management as well. He found joy in coaching youth sports in Gary Indiana and was well known throughout his home city. Danny was a devout Christian with uncompromised faith in the Lord. During retirement he was devoted to his in-home patients as a registered caregiver as well as a devoted Big Brother and mentor to several children in Topeka. He was an avid Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs fan. What brought Danny the most joy, was spending time with his grandchildren. They were the light of his life. Danny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bowman of Topeka, KS, 4 sons, DeWayne "Reecie" (Kenya) Bowman, Knoxville, TN; Travis "Tee" Bowman, Knoxville, TN; Aaron "AJ" McBride Jr., Orlando, FL.; Xavier "Zay" Williams, Chicago, IL; Brothers Alfred Bowman Jr., and William Bowman both of Merrillville, IN; Stephen (Josephine) Bowman of Topeka, KS; sisters Josie Buirse, Merrillville, IN; Patricia (Paul) Pollard, Huber Heights, OH; Betty (Arthur) Hicks, Crown Point, IN. Danny also leaves behind 13 beautiful grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Danny is preceded in death by his parents Alfred Sr. and Annie Bowman, brothers Leroy, Timothy and Jeffery Bowman and sister Evelyn Henderson.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Mehmood Hashmi and the staff at the Cotton O'Neil Cancer Center, as well as the wonderful nurses and staff in the 6 North wing, and the Palliative Care staff at Stormont Vail Hospital. Thank you for your kind care of our loved one.
