Damon E. Slyter, 74, of Topeka, passed away at his home after an extended illness on Wednesday, December 20, 2006. He was born on August 9, 1932 in Fontana, Kansas to Elmer and Anna Rodewald Slyter.
He was a graduate of Kansas State University with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Agricultural Education. He taught vocational agriculture at Paola High School for 13 years then moved on to the Kansas State Department of Education where he worked as a Educational Program Specialist for 25 years. Prior to teaching he served 2 years active duty in the United States Army. Throughout his working life he also served in the Kansas Army National Guard, including a tour in Vietnam, retiring with the rank of Colonel after 32 years of service.
He was a life member of the National FFA Alumni Association; National Vocational Agriculture Teacher's Association, Kansas Army National Guard Association and the American Legion in Paola, Kansas. He was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Damon married Ruth A. Hattaway on December 26, 1964 in Kansas City, Kansas. She survives.
Other survivors include his children, Scott (Cheryl) Slyter of Fayetteville, Georgia; Keith Slyter of Prairie Village, Kansas and Sally (Matthew) Morris of Irving, Texas; five granddaughters: Amber, Hayley, and Katherine Slyter of Fayetteville, Georgia and Audrey and Reagan Morris of Irving, Texas; two sisters, Maxine Brandt of Poway, California and Lois (Ted) Moore of Paola, Kansas and two brothers, Leonard (Dolores) Slyter of Preston, Maryland and Ray (Hazel) Slyter of Augusta, Kansas.
Mr. Slyter will lie in state after 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 22nd at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where familiy will greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at Prince of Peace Luthern Church, Saturday at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens.
