Dale Atwood, 95, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015, at Homestead of Topeka.
Dale was born December 27, 1919, in Oswego, KS, to Nova Thomas and Lena Jane (Robison) Atwood. He graduated in 1936 from Labette County High School in Altamont, KS. Dale enlisted in the Army in July 1944 and served in Europe during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. Dale then went on to the University of Kansas, where he received his medical doctorate in 1951.
He married Helen A. McNelly on February 1, 1953, in Wichita, KS. The couple then moved to Kinsley, KS, where they raised their family. He practiced family medicine for 36 years in Kinsley, delivering more than 1,100 babies in his career. After retiring from clinical practice, he earned his license as a financial planner. Dale was a Waddell & Reed agent in Kinsley for nearly ten years. After his second retirement, he and Helen moved to Topeka.
Dale was a member of the Kinsley Rotary Club since 1953, serving as president three times, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an active member of the Kinsley United Methodist Church for almost 50 years. Dale served as a member and president of the Kinsley-Offerle School Board.
He is survived by his five sons, Steven, of Springfield, MO, Larry (Charlotte), of Greenville, SC, Michael (Jennie), of Lawrence, KS, Eric (Robin), of Topeka, KS, and Jeff (Laura), of Wamego, KS; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Dale is preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen; sister, Verna Mae Crawford; and brothers, Robert and Nova Doyle Atwood.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2015, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the Mid-Town Chapel.
