D. Eugene Zimmerman, 83, of Topeka, died on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at home surrounded by his family.
Gene was born on January 10, 1933 near Dover, KS. He had wonderful memories of his childhood years on the farm and the close ties he had with his family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Zimmerman and his mother, Edna Patterson Zimmerman; an infant brother, Marvin and his sister, Esther Parton.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jessie and his children, Diana and Skeeter Ellis, Darin Zimmerman and Janis Perry as well as his adorable and fun loving grandchildren, Emily and Grace Ellis and Kero Zimmerman. They all brought great joy into his life.
Gene was a Korean War veteran in the 2nd Infantry Division. He lived in New York City for 8 years while studying opera and theater. He also worked in banking, for the State of Kansas, at KNI, and at TARC, where he was an assistant to the director, Ethel Mae Miller.
Gene left the workforce in 1977 at age 44 to pursue his life's real calling as a father and a homemaker for his wife and children. Throughout his life, Gene loved his family and truly enjoyed being a homemaker! He continued to love and appreciate music, a good sermon, and he was an equally good school teacher! Throughout his life, he regularly exercised at the gym or at home. He enjoyed yard work and, believe it or not, he also relished homework.
Gene and Jessie were blessed to be married for 53 years and they enjoyed a long retirement together. Their only regret was that they were unable to travel more at the end of their lives. But their life together has been good and they are confident that their journey together will continue in the next life!
