Cpl. Jason E. Harwood, 40, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2014, in the line of duty while honorably serving and protecting his community.
He was born January 24, 1974, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Raymond Harwood and Becky (Scott) LaFever. He graduated from Ulysses High School and attended Colby Community College and K-State University.
Jason married Lori Anne Shoff on June 17, 1995 in Colby, Kansas.
Cpl. Harwood served the Topeka community on the Police Department for 15 years, where he served as a member of the hit-and-run unit and the K-9 unit before being promoted to corporal in May 2012.
Cpl. Harwood was a decorated officer. He received a Letter of Commendation in 2001, a Medal of Merit in 2010 (departments 2nd highest award), Distinguished Service Bar (departments 3rd highest award) in September of 2013 and two Department Challenge Coins in November 2013.
Jason was a member of the Countryside United Methodist Church.
Jason is survived by his wife, Lori Anne Harwood and their sons, Tyler and Lawson. He is also survived by his mother, Becky LaFever and step-father, Bernie LaFever; brothers, Jeremy (Holly), Casey, and Carey (Amber) Harwood; sisters, Jennifer (Luke) Waldron, Tamara Lisle, Laura (Gene) Bolton, and Sharla (Brian) Loucks; and his K-9 partner, Magnum.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Harwood and grandparents, Ernest and Bobbie Scott.
Cpl. Harwood will lie in state from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2014, in Exhibition Hall at the Kansas Expocentre, Topeka.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the Kansas Expocentre. Interment will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 6th and Gage Boulevard, Topeka.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jason Harwood Memorial Fund at any Core First Bank & Trust or the Topeka Police Credit Union located at 320 S. Kansas Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66603.
