Constance Ann Smith

April 25, 1932 — July 17, 2017

Constance Ann Smith "Connie", as she was affectionately known, age 85, was born February 25, 1932 in
Clovis, NM to Everett K. (E.K.) & Louise B. (Martin) Smith, and passed away from complications of
Parkinson's disease July 17, 2017 at Brewster Health Care Facility, Topeka, KS.

The family moved to a farm near Hartford, KS when she was about 3 years old along with Connie's
younger sister, Beverly. Connie attended Four-Mile Grade School through 8th grade and graduated from Hartford High School in 1950 in a class of 14.

After graduation, she worked for 6 months at Hallmark Card Co. in Emporia, KS., moving to Topeka, KS in January, 1951, to work for Dept. of Revenue, State of KS. In November, 1951, Connie transferred to the state office building manager's department until July, 1965, when she transferred to the Dept. of
Administration. In November, 1968 she began working with Department of Human Resources, as an
accountant, a job she held until she retired February 20, 1995, after 43 years total employment with the
State of KS. During this time, Connie also attended classes at Washburn University.

She was a 55 year member of the First United Methodist Church, Topeka, and was also a member of the
Red Hat Group. Connie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and had received her 50 year
member pin. Connie served as Treasurer for her Homeowners Association, Barrington Downs, for many years. She met monthly with former friends and neighbors to play pitch.

Connie loved traveling and after her Mother & Aunt Mabel Martin moved to Topeka, the 3 of them went on numerous Tauck Tour trips abroad as well as throughout the United States & Canada. She also
traveled frequently to NM & TX to visit her family. She loved the mountains in NM, often going to
Ruidoso, NM to camp with her family in their RV.

Connie is survived by her two sisters, Beverly Jo (Smith) Baugh & husband, Marvin Baugh, Levelland, TX and Martha Louise (Smith) Schaaf & husband, Kenneth E. Schaaf, Sr., Las Cruces, NM; nephew - Kenneth E. Schaaf, Jr. & wife, Dr. Sharon Schaaf, Albuquerque, NM; nieces - Teresa Ann (Baugh) Jones & husband, Ted Jones, Katy, TX., Annette Carol (Baugh) Gregg and husband, Todd Gregg, Levelland, TX. She is also survived by 7 great nephews, 3 great nieces and 1 great, great nephew with a new great-great niece due in August. Her very special friends & former next door neighbors, Norman & Nancy Nellis, who faithfully assisted with her care after she moved to the Brewster campus in 2009, also survive her.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, E.K. & Louise Smith; paternal grandparents, James &
Rosetta Kurzen Smith; maternal grandparents, Sewell & Bessie Louise Martin; Aunts & Uncles -Mabel
Martin, Margaret (Martin) Weaver, Katherine (Martin) Long, George Martin, Don Weaver, Myrl Long,
Earl J. Smith & Ruth (Walker) Smith.

Connie has been cremated and her cremains will be buried with her parents in the family plot, Masonic
Cemetery, Las Cruces, NM at a later date.

A memorial service is planned at Brewster Health Care Facility Chapel, Topeka, KS, with date & time to be announced later, to which all friends, former co-workers and Brewster staff are invited to attend.

Connie's family would like to acknowledge the care & compassion extended to her over the past 8 years
while she was a resident at Brewster Retirement, Assisted Living and Health Care facilities by the many
nurses, aides and administrative staff who have assisted her & also became her friends.
