COL. (Ret.) Harley Alton Krull, 84, of Berryton, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2022, in Topeka, Ks.

He was born February 4, 1938, in Parker, South Dakota, the son of Harvey and Katheryne (Gottschalk) Krull. He grew up on the family farm and from there his love for country living flourished. Harley was destined to be a successful business man. He started a lawn care business while in high school and managed a mowing crew. While in high school, Harley was also employed at a local filling station and worked his way up to being a manager. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1956, during which time he was a class officer for four years.

After graduating, he went to Clarks Business College, graduating in 1957. Harley later went to Columbia College, Columbia, Missouri, and earned his Bachelors of Arts in Individual Studies, graduating in 1975.

Harley married the love of his life Carolyn Marie Redding on June 30, 1957. They were married at Carolyn's family home in Waverly, Kansas. To their union in marriage, they had two children, Roger and Kayeleen. In 1970, Harley and Carolyn moved to their newly constructed family home in Berryton, Kansas. After they moved to Berryton, Harley became very active within the small community. He started the first Cub Scouts group in the early 1970's and was a member of the Berryton Chapter of the Kiwanis. They also joined the Berryton United Methodist Church in 1973, where Harley served on the Finance Committee as a board member and joined the BUMM's (Berryton United Methodist Men's group). He was a member of the Freemasonry Scottish Rights, 32nd Degree, since 1965.

Harley and Carolyn enjoyed playing cards and going camping with the Wagonears camping group. He also enjoyed antique tractors and old country and western music. He especially enjoyed the music of Hank Williams, Sr., Ernest Tubb, and Johnny Cash.

COL. (Ret.) Krull was employed by the Kansas Army National Guard for 37 years, retiring in 1993. During his time of service in the Guard, he worked in numerous personnel positions, which included Personnel Officer and Recruiting and Retention Officer. During his final eight years of service, he was the Director of Maintenance. One of his major accomplishments as the Director of Maintenance was the establishment of the RETROEUR Rebuild Program, which rebuilt equipment from Europe for the National Guard nationwide. His military awards he earned included the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal 2d Award, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with three devices and the Army Service Ribbon. After his retirement from the military, Harley started a landscaping business.

Harley leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Carolyn Marie Krull; son, Roger (Kim) Krull; granddaughter, Ashley (Ross, III) Hain; step granddaughter, Brittany Burgess and nephew, Mike (Vicki) Ross. He was preceded in death by his parents; Daughter, Kayeleen Marie Krull; sister, Kathleen Ross; daughter in-law, Misty A. Krull and great grandchild, Ross A. Hain.

A funeral ceremony will be at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604. His family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. A graveside service with military honors will immediately follow at Lynn Creek Cemetery, Berryton, Kansas.
