Col. Carlr. Sandstrom (Us Army, Ret'D)

Carl R. Sandstrom (Col., US Army, Ret'd), 93, Topeka, formerly of Abilene, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2007 at Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center with his family at his side.

Carl was born in Herington, KS on March 1, 1913. He graduated from Herington High School and from Kansas State University in 1938, where he was a member of R.O.T.C. While a student at Kansas State, in 1937, he married Gladys Gugler and they shared over 69 years together.

Carl was called to active duty in the U.S. Army and served for over 20 years. In 1941 he served special duty in the office of Chief of Staff, Col. Dwight D. Eisenhower at Ft. Lewis, Washington. During World War II he served as commanding officer of a supply depot in Belgium which was responsible for providing rations, supplies and gasoline to the front lines as well as providing supplies to staging areas for D Day. He served as Quartermaster Officer and Director of Port Services in Yokohama, Japan where fleet reserves were outfitted for the Korean Operation from 1949 to 1952.

He resided in Abilene from 1958 until 1976 and was employed by the State of Kansas Banking Department as a bank examiner from 1966 to 1976 for the Salina territory. He was appointed Deputy Bank Commissioner in 1976 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1985 at the age of 72. He enjoyed playing golf until he was forced to only watch it on TV. He appreciated his friends at the VA gym and pool and at the YMCA pool.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, in 2006, son John D. Sandstrom in 2004, an infant son, brother Ralph Sandstrom, and sister Mildred Ellis.

He is survived by his daughter, Judi and husband, Orlo Rellinger of Wakarusa; a son Jeff and wife, Jane Sandstrom of Marysville; his daughter-in-law, Kathy Sandstrom of Lyndon; one sister, Florence Orr of Prairie Village; grandchildren, James (Stacey) Sandstrom and Martha Sandstrom of Topeka, Jay, John Paul, and Scott Sandstrom of Marysville, Barry (Becky) Sandstrom of Maple Hill, Cole and Kelsey Sandstrom of Lyndon, Blake (Alice) Sandstrom of Yucaipa, CA, Brent (Ingrid) Mullane of Huntley, IL, Suzanne (Steve) Logsdon of Tucson, AZ; and four great-grandchildren.

Col. Sandstrom was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. A funeral detail from Ft. Riley will provide military honors at the inurnment service at Mt. Hope Cemetery immediately following the memorial service.

The family will receive friends a half-hour prior to the memorial service.
