Clyde A. Bracken, 68, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Midland Hospice House.
He was born June 6, 1938 in Topeka, the son of Earl S. and Geraldine M. Gabriel Bracken.
He was a 1956 graduate of Topeka High School and enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served for four years. He began his career in 1957 as a floor layer for McCormack Rug Company and later for Conner Tile and Rug. After working for a short time for Topeka Building Trades, he became a business agent for the Floorlayers Union, # 1179 in 1987 until his retirement in 2000. He served as president of the floorlayers union from 1969 to 1987 and president of the Topeka Federation of Labor from 1992 to 2003.
He served on the board of the United Way of Greater Topeka and the Topeka Transit and was involved with Let's Help, Inc. He was a proud union brother and proud American democrat. He loved to ride motorcycles and took part in many benefit rides. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who tried to never miss any of his grandchildrens special events.
He married Marilyn L. Alexander on October 12, 1957 in Topeka. She survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald E. Bracken in 1979.
Other survivors include three daughters, Sharon Walker, Connie Child and her husband Don and Stacey Bracken, all of Topeka; six grandchildren; his stepmother, Betty Bracken of Topeka; two sisters; Judy Feirick, Niles, MI and Jan Heinz of Topeka, his special aunt, Lillian Gabriel of San Diego, CA; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Molly.
Mr. Bracken will lie in state after 1:00 pm, Tuesday, November 21 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 pm that evening. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, November 22 at the funeral home with burial to follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
