Clarice Janice (Schooler) Tilson, 92, Lenexa, formerly of Topeka, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017.
Clarice Janice (Schooler) Tilson was born July 14, 1924, in Maryville, MO, the daughter of Edward and Ethel Schooler. She graduated from Maryville High School in 1942. She attended Chillicothe Business College, Chillicothe, MO., and worked in secretarial positions at various times in her life.
She married Billy French Tilson August 17, 1945, in Portsmouth, VA at the end of his WW II Navy enlistment.
In her youth, Clarice was well known as a vocalist. She was trained in floral design and worked several years in that capacity in Atchison, KS.
She served in numerous leadership positions in church, school, PTA, and women's organizations. She was a charter member of the "Writer's Bloc," writing group in Topeka, KS. Her poems and articles were published in various newspapers in Kansas and Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years in September 11, 1996 and by her second husband, Truman Sloan on May 7, 2009. Survivors include three children, Cindy Rogers, Topeka, KS., the Rev. Alan R. Tilson, Minneapolis, MN., Dr. Nancy Tilson-Mallett, M.D., F.A.C.P. Kansas City, MO., seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Clarice was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Topeka, KS.
Contributions may be made to the Clarice Tilson Memorial Fund yet to be designated and sent in care of the funeral home
A visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel from 6-8 p.m., Monday, March 13, 2017. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
