Clarence "Merle" Holcomb, 80, Topeka, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2007 at his residence at Aldersgate Village.
He fought a long hard battle with Prostate Cancer and, of course, the cancer finally won. He was able to live on his own and maintain his own dwelling up to the last five months at which time he went to Midland Hospice for pain medication and treatment and then on to Aldersgate for the duration of his life.
Merle was born Oct. 13, 1927 to Clarence & Wenda (Boast) Holcomb.
He attended a one room elementary school for all eight grades and then went on to graduate from Seaman High School.
He retired from Santa Fe Railroad in 1989 after 42 years of service.
He was a member of Masonic Orient Lodge #51 and he volunteered at TAP.
Merle had a lot of artistic talent and also loved to garden. He grew many beautiful flowers for the people to enjoy at the Huntington Condos where he lived for many years. He was a supporter of the Arts & Theatres in Topeka.
He is survived by a sister, Doris Fitzpatrick of Topeka and a niece, Keri Fitzpatrick of Lakewood, CO, and 2 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.
A visitation of family and friends will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Monday, Nov. 5 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.
