Chester "Chet" Evans, Sr., 95, of Topeka, passed away January 12, 2009.
Chet was born in Joplin, MO February 24, 1913 to William O. and Crystal Mae (Arnold) Evans. He has been a resident of Topeka since 1954, having moved from Nevada, MO. Chet worked for Long Bell Lumber Company for many years and retired from Whiteley's Lumber Company. He was a member of Southwest Topeka Bible Church. Chet was a carpenter, as well as a golfer, and an avid baseball player and fan.
Survivors include his four children, Chet (Andrea) Evans Jr., Gary (Shirley) Evans, Carole Evans, and Janet Evans, all of Topeka; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Betty LeRoy of MO and Vivian Gripka of MO, and a brother, Oscar "Runt" Evans of MO. Chet is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Ruth, who passed away in August of 2002.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 15th, 9-11 am, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel in Topeka. Jim Springer, Sr. of Southwest Topeka Bible Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
