Charles William Mccabe

Charles William McCabe, 90, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010.

He was born June 9, 1919 in Corning, KS, the son of Harry E. and Ethel (Tietz) McCabe. He was a graduate of Corning High School. One of his and his brother's proudest accomplishments was winning the State Championship for Corning High School Basketball Team in 1937-38.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II on the USS Attala positioned in Iwo Jima and China-Berma. Prior to the military, he was employed by Boeing Aircraft in Wichita. After being discharged from the military he worked for Warnock Grocery in North Topeka. He began employment with the Phillip-Morris Company in 1948, retiring as sales promotion manager after 37 years of loyal service.
He was a 60 year member of the Meriden Masonic Lodge No 236 A.F&A.M. and a member of the Meriden Community Church. He was an avid bowler.

Charles married Delila I. Mize on March 12, 1938 in Lyndon, KS. She preceded him in death on October 12, 1998. Survivors include three daughters, Christine (John) Grandmontagne, Topeka, Lana Lynette Wiscombe, Idaho and Valera "Jody" (David) Snider, Topeka; 8 grandchildren Laurie Snider-Scallorn, Lawrence, Dee (Don) Snider Dance, Idaho, Missie (Carl) Snider Adamson, Omaha, David Snider II, Lawrence, Jerry C. (Penny) Wiscombe, Idaho, Robert C. Wiscombe, Idaho, Mona Grandmontagne Thomann, Lawrence, Dusty (Michelle) Grandmontagne, Topeka; his brother, Mac McCabe, Phoenix, AZ; his sister-in-law, Sandy McCabe, Topeka; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 2, 2010 at the Meriden Community Church, 200 Dawson St., Meriden, KS 66512. . Interment will follow at Meriden Cemetery. Mr. McCabe will lie in state after 3 p.m., Thursday, at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Meriden Community Church Building Fund or the Christian Home Association - Children's Square U.S.A., P.O. Box 8-C, Council Bluffs, Iowa 51502.
