Charles W. Stewart, 94, of Topeka, died Thursday, January 25, 2007 at McCrite's Plaza.
He was born May 22, 1912 in Lincoln County, KS to James R. and Edith Baughn Stewart.
He married Mateel Ulin on June 29, 1935 in Beloit, KS. Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his wife on Nov. 5, 2003 and an infant son Gary in 1938.
He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.
He was a licensed professional engineer and worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Charles was a charter employee in the Soil Conservation Service and was very proud of his service to that organization.
He was a veteran of WWII serving in Europe. He retired from the service with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Charles was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church of Topeka. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #77 of Hunter, KS, the Soil and Water Conservation Society, the Retired Officers Association, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He is survived by a daughter Connie Lummis of Topeka, a son James (Lorraine) Stewart of Streamwood, IL, and a sister Helen (Lew) Jensen of Sylvan Grove, KS. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jeni (Bob) Baker of Columbia, MO, Jeffrey (Lisa) Lummis of Topeka, Joliene Lummis of Lawrence, Eric Stewart of Milwaukee, WI, and one great grandchild, Mitchell Lummis of Topeka. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Paul Stewart.
Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 1, 2007 at the Spillman Cemetery, south of Hunter, Kansas. Mr. Stewart will lie in state after 12:00 noon Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. that evening.
