Charles Robert "Bob" Hughes was born to Charles Lyle Hughes and Harriet (Welch) Hughes on July 5, 1930 in Topeka, KS. Bob went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Midland Hospice House. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1948 and attended Washburn College for 3 years. He worked for Safeway from Sep 1945 until Sep 1950. He served in the Naval Reserve 3 years during high school and continued in active duty after graduation. He was in the Navy during the Korean War and served aboard the USS Bradford 3 years as radarman 3rd class from Sep 1950 through June 1952. He started working for Santa Fe RR in 1955, retiring in 1988 as a supervisor in the Information Systems Dept.

Bob married Mary Frances Smith on Feb 19, 1950 producing children, Barbara J (Hughes) Peter (Ben), Terry R Hughes, and Paul C Hughes (Pam); grandchildren, Tamra Smith (Darrell), Carrie Peter and Justin Hughes; great-grandchildren, Brandon & Conner Meeks, Alexa Smith & Katrina Peter, and sister, Patricia Barta. He was preceded in death by his parents. He loved having the family in for many celebrations throughout the years.

Bob was a member of Community Baptist, First Baptist and First Assembly of God. He was very active at Community Baptist and served in many positions, one of which was a Boy Scout leader and ushered at First Assembly of God. After retirement he worked on the Santa Fe Oldtimers club helping with mailing the monthly magazine. He also volunteered for the VITA program doing taxes each year until about 5 years ago.

He loved to square dance with the Stratojets and other clubs, travelling to Israel, Niagara Falls and various states in the US, and cruising Hawaii, Panama Canal, New England and the Caribbean. He was a photographer in his younger years taking wedding pictures and even developed his own photos.

Mary was the love of his life for 65 yrs. He loved the Lord and his family. He always had smile and a salute for the people he met at Atria. He lived a good life and is now well and happy in heaven waiting for Mary.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2015 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Private burial will take place at the Meriden Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Midland Care.
