Charles R. Smelter, 82, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Brewster Place in Topeka. He was born on May 11, 1926 in Topeka, the son of Charles F. and Lesta A. Isenberger Smelter. He graduated from Topeka High School. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Upon returning from the service, he joined his father in the family business, Smelter Plumbing Company. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and active in the PHCC Association. Charles married Bobbie J. Hamblin on February 15, 1947 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Sindi (Toad) Byrd, Debi (Dennis) Creech, Rebecca Phillips all of Topeka, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph L. Smelter. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at New Hope United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday in the parlor at New Hope United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to New Hope United Methodist Church, 2915 S.W. 8th St., Topeka, KS 66606, or to Brewster Place, 1205 S.W. 29th St., Topeka, KS 66611 or to the organization of the donor's choice.
