Charles Richard "Dick" Kirby, 78, Topeka, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2006.
Dick was born June 15, 1927 in Topeka, the son of Charles Nelson and Reba Moore Kirby Gay. He graduated from Topeka High School and attended Washburn University.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Dick was employed by Goodyear for over 30 years and retired in 1988.
Dick was a member of the American Legion Post 74, the Golden Rule Lodge #90, the Arab Shrine, and active in Lowman United Methodist Church. He was a longtime University of Kansas supporter and a member of the Williams fund. He was an avid golfer and member of Western Hills Golf Course and also an outdoorsman. One of the highlights of his year was the annual pheasant hunt in South Dakota.
He married Jacquelyn Elaine Piper on July 21, 1949 in Topeka. She died March 24, 2004. Survivors include a sister; Norma Hough, Topeka, foster daughter; Tracy Kuan, foster son; Michael Kuan and foster granddaughter; Jackie Yew, all of Malaysia; sister-in -law; Alberta Tuck and husband, Dean, Hoyt; and brother-in-law; Gary Piper and wife, Maxine, Austin, Texas; an aunt; Louise Moore, Topeka; and nieces and nephews.
A Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January10, 2006, at Lowman United Methodist Church. Mr. Kirby will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Monday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
