Charles Mcatee

Capt. Charles D. "Chuck" McAtee, (USMCR) Topeka, died April 8, 2005 at home from acute leukemia.

He was born July 8, 1928 in Mahaska, Kansas, the son of Loyd McAtee and Grace Woodman McAtee.

He graduated from Mahaska High School. He was a Washburn University graduate, both undergraduate and School of Law, receiving his juris doctorate in 1955. He was a combat Marine rifle platoon commander, Korea- 1951; Special Agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1955-1959; Administrative Assistant to Governor John Anderson, 1961-1964; candidate for Congress, Republican primary, 1964; Director of Kansas Penal Institutions, 1964-1968; candidate for Attorney General, Republican primary, 1968 and 2002; First Assistant United States Attorney, 1969-1970; partner in the law firm Eidson, Lewis, Porter and Haynes, 1970-1989; Of Counsel, Schroer, Rice, 1991-2003; recently semi-retired.

He was a life member of Washburn Alumni Association; The American Legion; the Veterans of Foreign Wars; Judge Advocate of the General Lewis Walt Marine Corps League; and Legal Officer of the First Marine Division Association. He was the first Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Reserve Center, Topeka, Kansas. He was past president of the Downtown Topeka Rotary Club; served on the Board of the Historic Jayhawk Theatre; the Advisory Board for the Uptown Railroad Station Preservation Project; and the Alumni Board of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was nominated Honorary President of the Topeka Bar Association, 2005. He is listed in the Best Lawyers in America, a legal reference guide; and in the National Registry of Who's Who.

He married Maria Goforth, August 24,1968. They were divorced. He married Norma Allison Badgley on September 20, 1997. She survives. Other survivors, his son, Daniel D. McAtee, Washington, D.C.; a stepdaughter, Linda Schilder, Arlington, VA; a stepson, Greg Badgley, Topeka, KS; and two stepgrandsons, Tanur Badgley and Bryce Badgley, Topeka, KS; his brother, Elden McAtee, South Milwaukee, WI; and his sister, Shirley Quinn, Scottsdale, AZ.

He will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Midtown Chapel, after 2:00pm, Monday, April 11; family visitation from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, Monday, April 11. Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at 1:00pm, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka, Kansas.
