Charles L. "Sam" Lutz
78, Topeka, passed away Thursday, July 8th at a Topeka hospital. He was born November 21, 1925 in Holton, KS the son of Carles and Mae Hill Lutz. He was a decorated Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was one of the few survivors of the sinking of USS Phillip F. Thomas in the Atlantic Ocean. Sam was a life long golf enthusiast, enjoyed fishing, gardening, hunting, reading and his dog Sassy.
Sam was a barber for over 50 years and had served as the State Barber Board Administrator. He marred Fern Counts in 1946, they were divorced. He married Lois Cummins, November 13, 1968, she survives. Survivors include brothers Loren of Portland, OR, Don and his wife Alyce of Long Beach, WA, Bob of Vancouver, WA and a sister Beverly of Portland, OR. Other survivors include his sons Brad and his companion Kate of Pittsburg, PA, Bruce and his wife Pat of Ponca City, OK, Greg of Topeka, daughter Kerrie and her husband Mike Roberts of Topeka. Stepdaughters Ginger Head and her friend Craig Walker, and Chris and her husband Mark Cavender of Topeka, 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren. He was prceded in death by a sister June McGehee and a stepson Michael Baylis.
He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and customers.
Sam will lie in state from Noon to 9PM Monday July 12 at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel. Services will be at Mount Hope Chapel at 10:00AM Tuesday, July 13 with military honors.
