"Charlie" as he was also known was born March 14, 1931, the middle son of three boys born to James Earl and Willie Rosetta (Hill) Lawson of Sedalia, Mo. He attended Washington grade school and graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1949.
While living in Sedalia, he was employed by the Uptown Theater and the Missouri Pacific Railroad. On November 2, 1951 he married Patsy Lou Hoehns at the Methodist parsonage in Smithton, Mo. They moved to Topeka in January, 1958 where he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad as a freight car repair man (Carman). He began enjoying his retirement in May of 1993.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Duane (Chuck) Lawson; granddaughter, Bailey Nicole Hazen; his parents; and both brothers, James Irvin Lawson and Melvin Earl Lawson.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy; three daughters, Carla (Tony) Hazen, of Lebo, KS, Kathryn (Don) Trotter, of Valley Falls, KS, and Cheryl (Eric) Wankum, of Merriam, KS; two sons, Keith (Beth) Lawson and Kurt (Beverly) Lawson, both of Topeka; and daughter-in-law, Kathy (Neil) Gilbert of Tecumseh. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, one great grandson, with great grandson #2 due in May.
Charlie served in the Marine Corps from 1952-1954 and later served with the active reserves for several years with the 101st Rifle Co. in Topeka. He was also a member of American Legion Post #1; Golden Rule Lodge No. 90 AF&AM; Santa Fe Old Timers Club; and the Gen. Lewis W. Walt Detachment of the Marine Corps League. He was a 50 plus years member of The Brotherhood of Railway Carman of America, later the TCU, Carman Division and later still, the IAM, Carman Division.
Charlie was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church, where for a while he taught Sunday school classes as well as serving on several committees. In addition, he served for several years as scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #40.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2010 at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 SE Michigan Ave., Topeka, KS 66605. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Charlie will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the family receiving friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to Highland Park United Methodist Church. Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel is handling arrangements.
