Charles Eugene "Gene" Hiebsch, 79, Topeka, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 25, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. Gene was born September 22, 1927 in Oskaloosa, KS the son of John and Nettie (Carson) Hiebsch.
Gene graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1946. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Gene worked for the Kansas Corporation Commission as an Engineer for 42 years before retiring in 1994.
Gene was a very active member and past Potentate of the Arab Shrine Temple. His memberships included; Provost Guard of the Arab Shrine, where he was the Director from 1972-83, Orient Lodge #51, Consistory of Scottish Rite, past President of C.S.S.A. Provost Guard Association, High Twelve Club #17, the Order of Quetzalcoatl, Camel Herders of Arab Shrine, and the Beulah Chapter No. 34 O.E.S. Gene was also a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, the Moose Lodge, The Topeka Engineers Club, and the American Legion Post #1.
He married Bonnie Ann Burgoyne on January 7, 1951, at Camp Polk, in DeRitter, LA. She preceded him in death on July 7, 1999. Gene was also preceded in death by two brothers, Victor Hiebsch and Leo Hiebsch, two sisters; Mildred Robertson and Lucille Hiebsch, all of Winchester, KS.
Gene is survived by his two sons, Stephen R. Hiebsch and Bradley J. Hiebsch, and wife Becky, three grandchildren, Audrie, Adam and Adrienne Hiebsch all of Topeka. He is also survived by three sisters, Bertha Wiley, Oskaloosa, KS, Mary Edmonds, McLouth, KS, and Lola Ross, Perry, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Internment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Gene will lie in-state at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday where family will greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. that evening.
