Charles E. Gatewood, 78, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2021.
He was born April 1, 1943, in Carbondale, Kansas, the son of Charles and Thelma (Nicol) Gatewood. He attended Washburn Rural High School.
After graduation, he worked for Rinehart Roofing. He worked his way up through the company and became a Superintendent. In 1983, Charles left Rinehart Roofing and opened his own business as Gatewood Roofing Inc. in Topeka. He retired in 2013.
Charles was a member of the Topeka Mustang Car Club and enjoyed restoring old mustangs. He enjoyed racing at the Kaw Valley Dragway in his younger years. He passed down his love for cars to his son and grandchildren.
He loved spending time with his family and taking family vacations. They enjoyed spending the holidays together. Charles favorite holiday was Christmas. In his spare time, he would tinker with different projects, bargain shop, and go to the casino. He would lend a helping hand to those in need and gave good advice to those in need.
Charles married Judy Stratton on January 26, 1962 in Lyndon, Kansas. Survivors include his wife; his children, Lori (Gerry) Gatewood-Murphy and Charles "Chuck" (Wendy) Gatewood; grandchildren, Matthew (Anna) Murphy, Isaac Murphy, Zachary Gatewood and Connor Gatewood; one great granddaughter, Charlotte "Charlie" Murphy and brother, Larry L. (Patti) Gatewood. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Richard Gatewood, William Gatewood, Daniel Gatewood, John Gatewood and Roxanne Gatewood-Brown.
A memorial ceremony will be held at 1:00 pm., Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at Penwell Gabel Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st, Topeka, KS 66604-3720.
