Charles Erwin Cusic, 80, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009. Mr. Cusic was born to parents Bernie "J.B." and Elsie (Moore) Cusic at their farm home northwest of Americus, Kansas, June 1, 1928.
Mr. Cusic attended grade and high schools in Americus, graduating in 1946. He enlisted in the Army that fall and was assigned to the 34th Infantry Division with occupational duty in Japan until his discharge in 1948. He returned to attend Emporia State University, earning a BS in Education and a Masters in School Administration. He then taught business subjects and coached basketball for 12 years in Northeast Kansas: 8 years at Nortonville, 2 at Perry, and 2 at Atchison County Community High School at Effingham, serving as Principal his second year.
In 1967, Mr. Cusic joined the sales staff of Ozark National Life Insurance, serving until 1982 when he moved to the bay shores of San Francisco, CA, becoming office manager for Ratcliff Hoist Co., located in San Carlos. He retired in 1997 and returned to Topeka in 1999.
Mr. Cusic is survived by his two brothers, Bernie Eugene (Jackie) Cusic of Emporia, and Marvin G. Cusic of Albany, OR; a niece, Karen (Ken) Darting of Topeka; two nephews, Charles Duane Cusic of Stanwood, WA, and John Michael Cusic of Anacortes, WA; several great-nieces and nephews, and a number of loved cousins. Nephew Bernie Kevin Cusic and sister-in-law Louree Cusic preceded him in death.
Graveside inurnment services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Americus Cemetery, Americus, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to Kuehne-Thomas Branch, YMCA, 1936 NW Tyler, Topeka, KS 66608. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is assisting the family.
