Charles Daniel King, 91, of Topeka, died Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Plaza West Regional Health Center.
He was born April 26, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Robert W. and Etta E. (Wickersham) King.
Charles was educated in St. Louis Public Schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942, receiving basic training at Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, New York. He served on a ship providing convoy duty between New York City and Key West, Florida, and later was transferred to a frigate serving in the South Pacific in the New Guinea and Philippine Islands campaigns. He was honorably discharged as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class in St. Louis, Missouri in November 1945.
Charles was employed as a carpenter from 1946 until 1958, when he became supervisor of installations for Library Bureau, a Division of Remington Rand. He became a salesman for Library Bureau, later Library Systems, from 1963 until his retirement in 1997.
Charles married Betty C. Crews in 1946 and they later divorced in 1972. He then married Claire E. Vincent in 1987. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Charles D. (Becky) King, Jr. of Overland Park, and Timothy S. (Renee) King of Leawood; three daughters, Karen E. King-Hayes of Overland Park, Denise J. Lampert of Eudora, and Renee C. (Leo II) Feehely of Severn, Maryland; eight grandchildren, Carolyn (Brian) Dixon, Brandon Henderson, Kimberlee Neal, Timothy King, Jr., Ashleigh King, Leo Feehely III, Austin Feehely, and Emmilly Hayes; and six great-grandchildren, Tyler Dixon, Connor King, Dylan Neal, Ayden Neal, Presley King, and Grayson King.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward King and James King; three sisters, Mary King, Helen Bokerman, and Rose Dunard; grandson, Kevin King; and daughter-in-law, Patsy King.
Charles was cremated. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at Leavenworth National Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care, CAT Association of Topeka, or Helping Hands Humane Society.
