Charles "Charlie" Morris Springer, Topeka, Kansas, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2021, creating a synchronicity that would have amused him greatly by dying on his 84th birthday. He loved celebrating his birthday, and family members sang and toasted him as he turned toward heaven.
Charlie was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on Aug. 22, 1937, to Charles A. and Vivian (Kagi) Springer. He attended primary and secondary school in Lawrence, where classmates at a reunion described him as the "sweetest boy" in their class.
After high school, Charlie attended the University of Kansas - and he was a dedicated KU fan for all of his life! - and then joined the Army.
Charlie loved to tell jokes and his bright blue eyes would sparkle. He would laugh delightedly when he got everyone around to laugh with him. Anyone who met Charlie knew that he was genuinely who he appeared to be, and he was a man who could be trusted.
His family joked that Charlie loved his wife, Judy Chilson-Springer, and his dog, Sophie, above everyone else in the world. Judy joked that sometimes the order was reversed. Charlie loved dogs of all kinds and always had a puppy in his home after marrying Judy. He grieved terribly when they died, and we imagine him now sitting in heaven with Sarge, Laverne, and Sally jumping on his lap.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Judy, of the home in Topeka, Kansas; two stepdaughters, Morgan (Stan) Rothenberger, Topeka, Kansas, and Tracy (Ron) Current, Leesburg, Ohio; brother, Byron (Marion) Springer Sr., Highlands Ranch, Colorado; sister, Phyllis Springer, Paris, France; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
