Charles C. Schmidt

Charles C. Schmidt, 78, Topeka, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 4, 1930 in Sedalia, MO, the son of William S. and Sarah E. Farris Schmidt, and had lived in Topeka since 1956.

Charles was a sheet metal worker at Stevenson Company for 35 years, and was superintendent of the stainless steel department at the time of his retirement in 1990. He served in the US Navy from 1946 to 1948. He was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church over 35 years, Golden Rule Lodge #90 AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Arab Shrine, Capitol Post #1 American Legion, VFW Post #15017, and Sheet Metal Workers Local #2. He formerly was a Scoutmaster of Troop #4, and served as a coach at SCABA.

He married Mary Adele Kunkler on Nov. 2, 1962 in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Terry Schmidt (Kelli) of Shawnee, KS and Paul Schmidt of Fairway, KS; one sister, Mary Sue Sutton of Topeka; two grandchildren, Taylor Danielle Schmidt and Logan Todd Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William H. Schmidt and Sam Schmidt, and four sisters, Lillian Caldwell, LaVon Epple, Lucille Busker, and Irma Jean Leibach.

Cremation is planned. Following private inurnment services at Topeka Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Countryside United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
