Charles was born March 9, 1931 in Horton, KS. He was known by friends as Chuck, and by family as Putz. He was confirmed and was an altar boy at St Joseph's in Everest, KS. He worked on the family farm and attended Everest High School where he met his future wife, Alice Bond. He got her attention being wild on his motorcycle while she was walking home from work. Charles enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1948, and served in the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict. He proposed to Alice by letter while he was stationed in Korea. They were married on December 27, 1952 and celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary prior to Alice's passing. He was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2 before he retired in 1970.
He settled in Topeka, Kansas in 1970, with his family where he lived the rest of his days.
Charles worked for Frito Lay and was promoted to management before he retired in 1996. He traveled extensively and loved traveling with his family through several countries in Europe and across the United States, particularly to Alaska and Maine. His most recent trip was to Walt Disney World Resort for the first time at ninety years old.
He was a dedicated father and grandfather, attending all his children's and grandchildren's events, and recording everything on his video camera. He served as the family mechanic and fix-it man. He often rescued animals and then released them back into the wild, was passionate about his tomato crop, and was extremely thoughtful and generous. He would never hesitate to help someone or give them the shirt off his back.
